To fully deliver on the promise of technology now and into the future, we require careful attention to the implementation processes of new technologies, the cascades of impacts on healthcare work, and the ethical implications of these new frontiers.

The following resources have been created by members of the ETCHwork community and are free to download.

Design Fictions Toolkit

Building from empirical work on sociotechnical imaginaries, health information system work‑arounds, and a meta‑ethnography of technology implementation, we collaborated with a speculative fiction writer (Andrew Dana Hudson) to develop fictional vignettes that make sociotechnical futures tangible. Working with a post-doctoral fellow (Joseph Donia), we developed an interactive “game” that uses these vignettes to build capacities in sociotechnical imagination and technomoral reasoning. This game involves prompt cards, based on science and technology studies framework of mechanisms of technomoral change. The aim of the game is to develop insights into the normative changes that accompany technology implementation. This work has been supported by AMS Healthcare as part of Paula Rowland’s Senior Fellowship.

Discussion Papers

The opportunities and challenges ahead of us are both theoretical and practical. Theoretical questions include how we think about institutions, ethics, and identities in relation to emerging technologies in healthcare. Practical questions include dynamics of innovation, regulation, and policy related to technology as well as imperatives to support whole systems learning and systems transformation.
